It was an important year for OCEM which finally saw the turnover, which had remained almost stable after COVID, return to growth. 2023 was the best result of the last 7 years and we are undoubtedly proud of it.
Ugo Giannelli, CEO of OCEM, talks about the year that has just ended and outlines the development prospects of his company. He does so in an in-depth but informal chat, on a December morning, during a walk that takes him from the company headquarter to the heart of Florence, the city that has always hosted it. We talked about: the market and its variations, the most obvious phenomena and those to be expected, the maturation and growth of a sector which has seen OCEM, for decades, play a leading role in the global panorama.
Challenges to face and new objectives to achieve are the prerequisites for continuing the journey that brings OCEM’s Italian know-how to all five continents.
Mr. Giannelli, would you comment on OCEM’s year 2023?
It was an important year for OCEM which finally saw the turnover, which had remained almost stable after COVID, return to growth. 2023 was the best result of the last 7 years and we are undoubtedly proud of it.
What aspects characterized the year that has just ended?
There have been many changes in our world which I summarize in two fundamental phenomena: the collapse of resin-based products due to well-known health-related issues and the saturation of the market for ceramic products. These two events, combined with other less important ones, have given a new life to cement and related products including the tiles and slabs that are produced with our plants.
“
Speaking about the future, how do you see the market in 2024?
With a lot of optimism. To date we already have orders for over 6 million euros, diversified by geographical area and product.
“
Geographically, which are the areas that show the greatest vitality?
Certainly Europe and the Middle East but also Latin America and Asia in general. However, there is excitement on a global level.
From a product point of view, what have you observed? What are the most frequent requests and how has demand changed, if it has changed?
Without forgetting standard production, the trends are undoubtedly large formats, single-layer tiles and then shotblasting, brushing and coating for both tiles and pavers.
How OCEM moved in the last twelve months? What development dynamics have been undertaken?
We have strengthened our technical structure and consolidated our plant engineering vocation. OCEM has definitively abandoned the role of sole manufacturer of presses to increasingly assume leadership in the design, manufacture and installation of complete turnkey systems, customized and dedicated to the growing technical demands of our global customers.
Speaking about the future, how do you see the market in 2024?
With a lot of optimism. To date we already have orders for over 6 million euros, diversified by geographical area and product.
How is OCEM preparing to face the new year?
Essentially with three activities: expansion of the workforce in key roles and departments, development of internal skills and extension of the commercial network. I can proudly say that every year we reduce the average age of our employees, this means that the company never stands still, but is renewed.
If you had to tell us three key phrases around which the growth of your company will depend, what would they be?
First of all I would say: “from the press to the complete and customized plant”. This means greater commitment and know-how on the part of our technical team to respond to new and different market needs. Then I would say: “from the tile to the large slab” as a real phenomenon of variation in demand and, related to this, “from the tile to the VAP (Value Added Products)”. Finally, I would like to add a fourth: “the growing demand for support, consultancy and after-sales” i.e. moving from the single machine to the turnkey project, combining it with an effective customer service. It is no coincidence that we have been investing in the latter for some time. OCEM customers can count on continuous and professional commercial and technical assistance.
